Problem Solving

This is an integral part of maths, as it allows pupils to broaden and deepen their understanding of various mathematical concepts. Pupils have been given the opportunity to solve a range of problems including; logic problems, finding all the possibilities, word problems, visual problems and problems that involve spotting patterns and finding rules. Through this, pupils have developed their curiosity about the subject and it has allowed them to use their knowledge and skills in context, which is vitally important.

Multiplication Tables

This is a vitally important skill, which children throughout the school use on a daily basis in many areas of the curriculum. It is paramount that children have a secure knowledge of their times tables and are able to recall these facts quickly and accurately. With this in mind, Phoenix has chosen to introduce the Times Table Challenge. From years 2-6, pupils complete a weekly test that is directly linked to their ability. They must achieve 100% on three consecutive tests to move up to the next level. In order to help pupils, a homework sheet is sent home, which parents can use to help their children learn these facts. We would encourage parents, where possible, to practise these facts with their children on a daily basis.

Calculations

There is a specific calculation policy outlining the methods used and taught for all four operations across the school. This ensures progression and continuity across year groups and the school when teaching calculation and embeds the knowledge of the four operations. For further information see the Calculation Policy.

Mathematics

Mathematics is a creative subject which develops essential skills for everyday life. It is vitally important that children develop a good level of mathematical understanding, and therefore, a high-quality Mathematics education is paramount. At Phoenix Community Primary School, we have a strong focus on the basic principles of Maths, which support the children to be successful, reflective learners. We also place a strong emphasis on the children’s ability to reason mathematically, with problem solving at the heart of our teaching. This in turn will broaden children’s knowledge, whilst encouraging them to relate their learning to real life situations. Most of all, throughout this depth and breadth experience, they will grow a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

We also encourage parents to support their children in developing their mathematical understanding. This can vary, from allowing your child the opportunity to experience money in a real-life situation, telling the time, or even learning their times tables and basic number bonds.
